Melanocortin System

The melanocortin system comprises five G-protein-coupled receptors, MC1R through MC5R, with distinct tissue distributions and downstream effects. Most synthetic ligands studied in this space are non-selective across MC1R, MC3R and MC4R, which makes receptor-subtype discrimination a central problem in the literature rather than a solved one.

Compounds here are grouped by the receptor family they act on, not by structure.

Choosing between these

What separates each of these from the others in the class.

  • Non-selective across MC1R, MC3R and MC4R, so it engages the pigmentation receptor alongside the central ones.

  • PT-141 10 mg

The active metabolite of melanotan II, with activity concentrated at MC3R and MC4R rather than MC1R. That narrower subtype coverage is exactly why the two are usually studied as a pair.
