Incretin System

The incretin system is the set of gut-derived hormone pathways that modulate insulin secretion in response to nutrient intake. Its two principal receptors, GLP-1R and GIPR, are class B G-protein-coupled receptors, and the glucagon receptor (GCGR) sits alongside them in the same family. Research interest in this class has moved from single-receptor agonists toward peptides engineered to engage two or three of these receptors at once, because the signalling consequences of combined activation are not simply the sum of the parts.
