Growth hormone release from the anterior pituitary is governed by two distinct receptor systems. The GHRH receptor responds to growth-hormone-releasing hormone and its analogs; GHS-R1a, the ghrelin receptor, responds to a separate family of secretagogues. Because the two pathways converge on the same somatotroph population through different second-messenger routes, they are frequently studied together rather than in isolation.
